WHAT IS REC THERAPY ?
WHAT WE DO
Therapeutic Recreation is the structured use of recreation and leisure interventions to help individuals who experience physical, cognitive, emotional, and social barriers and challenges. A Recreation Therapist is a professional who has acquired specific education, training and skills in health and wellness. Therapeutic Recreation requires evidence-based and goal oriented treatments that promote growth, happiness, well-being and independence for target clients.
Therapeutic Recreation can benefit a wide range
of people and populations. It is often implemented in long term care and assisted living facilities, is used in rehabilitation clinics for injury recovery, coping and treating illnesses and disease and is also found in all levels of mental health care. Therapeutic Recreation is used with infants and young children all the way up through the elderly populations and even in palliative care.
WHERE WE DO IT
Although Therapeutic Recreation is a relatively young member of the health care system it is increasing in both it's recognition and application. We work side by side with interdisciplinary teams of Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Developmental Support Workers and many more. It is the intention of organizations such as SMTRA to push professional advancement and advocate for the importance and potential of our field.
WHY YOU SHOULD DO IT
